This is a soft felt, 10mm thick, with hessian scrim in the centre. It's like a really nice 100% wool underlay. It's a versatile material suitable for a range of applications. It would be great to use in rug backings or felt art.

You can use it as pure wool underlay but be warned, it's only 50% moth proof as it's made from 50% ionic protect wool and 50% clean-but-untreated Herdwick wool. If you've tried our Snug Feet insoles, you'll know how great it is to walk around on pure wool. It's got a natural bounce and springiness about it.  If you want 100% mothproof underlay we advise you to buy our Herdwick wool underlay that is 12mm thick and 100% moth-proofed with Ionic Protect.

Wool is sustainable so it's better for the environment than synthetic materials used for most felts. Plus it absorbs volatile compounds so it's better for the home.

Herdwick sheep run around the Lake District mountains all year round; they're about as wild as you can get for a domesticated animal. They produce a coarse, wiry wool that is a range of different shades from brown, dark grey, light grey, to white. All these colours are mixed into this product making it an attractive natural grey colour. You can read about how we source our wool here.

  • Strands of red, purple and turquoise recycled cotton thread being processed

    Eco-Friendly Yarn

Our yarns are made from left-over textiles, sourced from mills and factories. Saved from landfill, the cotton is spun into our macrame cords, or cut into strips for t-shirt yarn.

    We sell UK wool

We buy A LOT of Herdwick wool from local farmers, around 30 tons a year. Our other wool products are made in the UK using UK wool.
